Westward Journey Nickel: History & Background

The Westward Journey Nickel Series was a two-year commemorative program celebrating the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition and the Louisiana Purchase. In 2004, two reverse designs were issued: the Peace Medal design by Donna Weaver and the Keelboat design by Al Maletsky, both paired with the traditional Schlag obverse. In 2005, the obverse was changed to Joe Fitzgerald's forward-facing portrait of Jefferson, with reverses depicting a bison by Jamie Franki and the Ocean in View design by Joe Fitzgerald. These coins were widely saved by the public and are readily available, though the special satin-finish specimens from 2005 Mint sets carry a modest premium.

How to Grade a Westward Journey Nickel

Accurate grading is the single most important factor in determining a coin's value. A difference of just a few grade points can mean 10× or more in value. Examine the highest points of the design first — these are where wear appears earliest. For the finest grades, luster, strike quality, and surface preservation all matter. Professional grading by PCGS or NGC adds certainty and typically increases resale value. Read our complete grading guide →
