South Dakota State Quarter: History & Background

The South Dakota quarter showcases Mount Rushmore, the iconic sculpture carved into the Black Hills granite featuring the faces of Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln. A ring-necked pheasant, the state bird, flies in the foreground along with heads of wheat. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum and 400 workers spent 14 years (1927–1941) carving the 60-foot-tall presidential portraits.

How to Grade a South Dakota State Quarter

Accurate grading is the single most important factor in determining a coin's value. A difference of just a few grade points can mean 10× or more in value. Examine the highest points of the design first — these are where wear appears earliest. For the finest grades, luster, strike quality, and surface preservation all matter. Professional grading by PCGS or NGC adds certainty and typically increases resale value. Read our complete grading guide →
