American Innovation Dollar: History & Background

The American Innovation Dollar program was authorized in 2018 to celebrate innovation and ingenuity from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the five US territories. The common obverse features a dramatic image of the Statue of Liberty by Justin Kunz, while reverse designs change with each release to honor a specific innovation or innovator from each jurisdiction. The introductory 2018 coin featured George Washington's signed document that established the US patent system. The program is scheduled to run through 2032, producing four new coins per year in the order states ratified the Constitution.

How to Grade a American Innovation Dollar

Accurate grading is the single most important factor in determining a coin's value. A difference of just a few grade points can mean 10× or more in value. Examine the highest points of the design first — these are where wear appears earliest. For the finest grades, luster, strike quality, and surface preservation all matter. Professional grading by PCGS or NGC adds certainty and typically increases resale value. Read our complete grading guide →
