2000-P Sacagawea/Quarter Mule Error: History & Background

The 2000-P Sacagawea/Quarter Mule is one of the most extraordinary modern US Mint errors ever discovered. This coin was struck with a Sacagawea dollar obverse die paired with a Washington quarter reverse die, creating a coin that shows Sacagawea on one side and the heraldic eagle from the quarter on the other. Only about 19 examples are known to exist, all struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The error occurred because both denominations were being produced simultaneously and a quarter reverse die was accidentally paired with a dollar obverse die. The first specimen was discovered by Frank Wallis in May 2000 and authenticated by PCGS, sending shockwaves through the numismatic community.

How to Grade a 2000-P Sacagawea/Quarter Mule Error

Accurate grading is the single most important factor in determining a coin's value. A difference of just a few grade points can mean 10ร— or more in value. Examine the highest points of the design first โ€” these are where wear appears earliest. For the finest grades, luster, strike quality, and surface preservation all matter. Professional grading by PCGS or NGC adds certainty and typically increases resale value. Read our complete grading guide โ†’
